Purple Plum Tree

What You May Not Know About the Purple Plum Tree

The purple plum tree, which goes by the scientific name of Prunus Cerasifera, is also known as the Thundercloud purple leaf plum and the cherry plum. It's a medium sized tree that is used for ornamental purposes, mostly due to its beautiful reddish or purple colors that appear on its foliage. Many gardeners and land owners that want to make their gardens and lawns stand out use this tree as an accent piece to add something with style and character to their landscaping projects.

There are a couple of different varieties of this tree. The Mt. St. Helens produces flowers that are rounded and light pink. On the other hand, the Thundercloud produces deep purple foliage and purple fruits. The Newport has light pink flowers like the Mt. St. Helens, but fewer fruits.

The purple plum tree can be grown in lawns or gardens and is usually used as an accent piece. It was introduced to the western world by M. Pissard who brought it to France from Persia, where it is native. Now, it is grown in a variety of places in the United States as well. If you wish to plant it, then you should make sure that you know how to take care of it first.

The purple plum tree is a small tree and has a short lifespan. It can grow to be about 25 feet, although most of them are around 15 feet in height.  It also has a span of about 20 feet once it reaches maturity. On average, it lives to be about 20 years old so when you're panting it, don't expect it to be a permanent fixture.

The tree will start showing its blossoms in the early springtime. It's not uncommon to see it blooming in late February. The blossoms are small and have either light pink or white flowers. They smell very nice and attract a lot of bees. The blossoming of the purple plum tree is actually one of first signs that springtime is coming since it's one of the first trees to blossom.

There is some fruit that appears on the trees and they start emerging around July. The fruit is about the size of a cherry and gets ripe in August. Some people eat the fruit raw or use them in jam. By the end of September, the tree will have lost all of its foliage.

You can grow the purple plum tree in almost any type of soil. As long as it is moist and well-drained, it will do well. It does best when planted in a soil that is lightly acidic although it will do okay in other kinds, too. When planted, you should make sure that it gets plenty of sunlight because this will help produce the purple leaves. If it's planted in the shade, the leaves will be greenish.

It is also very important to prune this tree well. If you prune it, then it will encourage the tree to blossom and this just makes it look better. Taking away the parts of the tree that are damaged or diseased will help keep it healthy, too. Don't water the tree too much, but do water it regularly.

Make sure that you take care of your tree properly and it will remain healthy. The purple plum can be susceptible to mealy bugs, aphids, and other things that can damage it so take care of these problems if they arise. If you see to the needs of your tree, it will look great in your garden and work well when either planted alone by itself, or used as an accent piece.
